Inspect the wheel every time the tire is off

The wheel policy that costs a fleet nothing is a habit rather than a service: look at the wheel whenever a tire comes off it.

That is the only moment the bead seat is visible, and the bead seat is where the problems are. Corrosion there stops a tubeless tire sealing regardless of what tire is fitted. Damage from a curb or an impact shows there before it shows anywhere else. A crack, when there is one, is a wheel that has reached the end of its life and should not go back on.

Nobody needs a program for this. They need the habit of looking, and somebody who knows what they are looking at.

What refurbishing does

The national wheel refurbishing page covers the process. The habit described above is the part that matters: refurbishing only ever happens to wheels somebody looked at.

What does not come back is a wheel with a crack or structural damage. The inspection establishes that before work starts, which is the point of inspecting rather than refinishing and hoping.

The economics

Replacing a commercial or equipment wheel costs considerably more than refurbishing one, and on larger sizes the gap is wide enough to be worth a call before an order goes in.

The downtime objection is answered by timing. Monroe collects casings for retreading at the Purcell plant in Portland, and the wheels are accessible at exactly that moment. Done then, the work adds nothing to the time a unit is off the road.

Equipment wheels and the mining program

Monroe is the only Purcell location in Washington running mining fleet services, and wheel condition belongs in a program rather than outside it.

A wheel under an OTR tire is a substantial asset working in hard conditions, and it is inspected at change-out as a matter of course rather than when something leaks. OTR services are run from this store as well, so the tire and the wheel are handled together.

About this store

The Monroe store runs seventeen services, is open Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM, and is managed by JR Webster. Lacey and Renton offer the same service.

Questions

Wheel refurbishing questions, Monroe

When should a wheel be inspected?

Every time its tire is off. That is the only moment the bead seat can be seen, and it is where the problems start.

A new tire still leaks. What is wrong?

Usually the bead seat. A tubeless tire seals against the wheel, so corrosion or damage there leaks whatever tire is fitted.

Can a cracked wheel be refinished?

No. A crack ends the wheel and it is replaced.

How do we avoid extra downtime?

Send wheels while the tires are off for a retread or a change. The work then happens inside downtime you were already taking.
