A wet climate is a corrosion climate
Wheels are treated as permanent because they look permanent. In a climate where wheels are wet for much of the year, and where vehicles work on unsealed ground, that assumption costs money.
Corrosion does its worst at the bead seat, which is the narrow band of metal a tubeless tire seals against. There is no inner tube holding the air. The seal is the wheel, and once the surface is pitted the assembly leaks regardless of what tire is fitted to it.
What that looks like day to day is a position that needs topping up every week, a new tire that behaves exactly the same way, and a driver who stopped mentioning it months ago.
What refurbishing covers
The national wheel refurbishing page covers the process. In a wet climate the inspection is the part that pays, since corrosion does its work on surfaces a mounted tire keeps out of sight.
Not everything can be saved. A crack, or damage affecting the structure, ends a wheel, and the inspection establishes that before any work starts rather than after you have paid for it.
The case against replacing
Replacement costs considerably more than refurbishing on a commercial wheel, and on equipment sizes the gap is wide enough to be worth a phone call before an order goes in.
The usual objection is downtime, and that is the part worth planning rather than accepting. Lacey collects casings for retreading, and a wheel is at its most accessible the moment its tire has come off for the plant. Doing both together costs no additional time off the road.
When a vibration is the wheel
A tire balanced perfectly on a wheel that is out of round still shakes. Tire and wheel balancing is offered at this address, so the rim can be checked in the same visit rather than after a second balance has failed.
Equipment wheels
Lacey also runs OTR services, so a wheel from a loader or a haul truck and the tire on it are handled in one place. For a machine, that is one period of downtime rather than two.
