Purcell Tire & Service in Lacey, WA

The Purcell commercial store at 2911 Marvin Road NE in Lacey covers the south Puget Sound area with nine services for trucks, trailers, fleets and off-highway equipment. All nine tire categories are carried.

The southern end of the Washington network

Purcell has three locations in Washington, and this is the southernmost. For a fleet working south or west of the metro, it is the store that does not involve driving into Seattle traffic to reach.

It is a commercial location: tires, alignment, fleet accounts, off-highway work and roadside assistance, with no general vehicle repair. Brakes, oil changes, A/C and engine work are at Monroe, on the far side of the metro.

Services

Nine services

Alignment on everything. Heavy-duty truck alignment for the tractor, trailer alignment for what it pulls, and car and light truck alignment for the pickups that follow the job around.

Tires and what goes with them. Tire and wheel balancing, wheel refurbishing and retreading through the Purcell program.

Equipment. OTR services, covering fitting, change-outs and repairs on the tires under loaders, haul trucks and graders.

The account and the emergency. Fleet services holds the specifications and the schedule; 24-hour roadside assistance deals with the unit that did not keep to it.

Rain, logging roads and tire damage

Work in this part of the state takes vehicles off pavement more often than a highway fleet expects: forestry tracks, gravel, construction access and wet unsealed surfaces.

Two consequences show up in the tires. The first is cuts and punctures from embedded material, which are repairable when they are caught and fatal to a casing when they are not. The second is a wear pattern that looks like alignment but is sometimes just the surface, which is why reading the old tires before fitting new ones is worth the minute it takes.

If a tire has taken damage, have it looked at rather than waiting to see. A repairable injury left alone becomes a scrapped casing, and the casing is the part worth protecting.

Retreading in the northwest

Casings collected here go to the Purcell retread plant in Portland, Oregon, the nearest of the seven and a short haul by the standards of this network.

That distance matters more than it sounds. Casings are heavy, and shipping them a long way erodes the saving that makes retreading worth doing at all. A fleet on this corridor is in one of the better positions in the country for it. See retreading.

Questions

Questions about the Lacey store

Can I get brakes or an oil change here?

No. Lacey is a commercial store covering tires, alignment, fleet work and off-highway equipment. For vehicle repair, Monroe is the Washington store.

What are the hours?

Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, closed at weekends. 24-hour roadside assistance covers commercial units outside those hours.

How is this store different from Renton?

It is not, in terms of what it does: both run the same nine services and carry all nine tire categories. Lacey is further south, which is the whole of the difference.

I picked up a cut on a gravel road. Is the tire finished?

Not necessarily. Many injuries are repairable when they are caught early, and on a commercial tire the casing is worth saving. Have it inspected rather than deciding in the yard.

Where do casings go for retreading?

To the Portland, Oregon plant, which is the nearest Purcell plant. The store collects them and they come back ready to run.
