Carry a quart of the right oil on a long trip

Joplin sits on I-44 at a corner where four states meet, and plenty of the vehicles that come through are on a long drive. A road trip is the one occasion when an engine's oil level is most likely to drop and least likely to be checked.

Most engines use some oil between changes. A few use a noticeable amount, particularly older engines and some modern small turbocharged ones, and sustained highway speed for hours at a time tends to bring that out. A vehicle that never seems to need topping up around town can be a quart low after a long day on the interstate.

Running low is not instantly harmful, but it leaves less oil doing the same work, it runs hotter, and on an engine already using oil it can go further than the driver expects.

A simple habit for the trip

  • Check the level at a fuel stop. Engine off for a few minutes, vehicle on level ground, dipstick wiped and reinserted fully.
  • Carry a quart of the oil your engine actually takes. The specification is in the owner's manual and often on the filler cap. A quart of the wrong grade bought in a hurry at a gas station is a poor substitute.
  • Do not overfill. Add a little, wait, and check again. Too much oil causes its own problems.
  • Note how much went in. If it needed more than you expected, mention it at the next change. Consumption is information about the engine.

Before you set off

A change before a long trip, if one is due or close to due, means the trip starts on fresh oil. The national oil change page covers what the service includes. An engine that is using a lot of oil, or leaving spots, is worth a look under engine repair, and the rest of the pre-trip list belongs to scheduled maintenance, both here.

Questions

Oil change questions, Joplin

Should I check my oil on a road trip?

Yes. Long highway driving can bring out oil consumption that never shows around town. Check at a fuel stop.

What oil should I carry?

The grade and specification your engine takes, from the owner's manual or the filler cap.

How do I check it properly?

Engine off for a few minutes, on level ground, dipstick wiped and pushed fully home, then read.

It needed more oil than usual. Does that matter?

Mention it at the next change. How much an engine uses tells you something about its condition.
