Check for open recalls before the visit
A maintenance visit is a good moment to deal with everything a vehicle needs. One thing it usually misses is a safety recall, because recalls are handled differently from routine service and most owners never check for them.
Manufacturers issue recalls when a defect affecting safety is found in a model. The repair is normally done free of charge, but it is generally done through the manufacturer's dealer network, and the owner is expected to act on the notice. Notices go to the registered owner at the time, which means a vehicle bought second-hand, or an owner who has moved, can carry an open recall nobody knows about.
Checking takes a couple of minutes. The vehicle identification number, on the dashboard where it meets the windshield and on the registration, is all you need. The manufacturer's own website and the federal government's vehicle safety website both let you look up a VIN for open recalls.
Why bring it up at a maintenance visit
Because the two are worth coordinating. If a recall affects a part that a scheduled job would also touch, there is no point paying to service something the manufacturer will replace. If a recall needs a dealer visit, it is easier to plan both in the same week than to be without the vehicle twice.
Tell the store about any open recall when you book. They can tell you what scheduled work makes sense around it.
What scheduled maintenance covers
The items the manufacturer lists for your vehicle at its mileage: fluids, filters, belts, inspections and the like. Bring the owner's manual or the current mileage. Jobs that come out of an inspection are their own services here, including brake repair and oil changes. The national scheduled maintenance page explains how the schedule works.
Joplin also performs state inspections, which can be booked for the same visit.

Springfield and Springdale, AR also offer scheduled maintenance.
