Repair or replace: what the decision needs
When a large OTR tire is damaged, the choice between repairing it and replacing it is worth a lot of money either way. A sound repair can return a tire with substantial life left to work. A repair attempted on a tire that should have been retired is money spent on a failure that is coming anyway.
The decision rests on facts about the tire, and the site usually holds most of them. Having them ready when you call shortens the conversation and the downtime.
Where the damage is. Tread, shoulder or sidewall. Damage in the tread area is generally more likely to be repairable than damage in the sidewall, which flexes constantly.
How big it is. The length of a cut and how deep it appears to go. A photograph with something for scale, such as a tape measure, is far more useful than an estimate.
How much tread is left. A tire near the end of its tread may not justify a repair, while one with most of its tread is worth the effort.
How many hours it has run. Along with its history: whether it has been repaired before, and whether it has been run low or overheated.
What caused it. If the same haul road or the same loading area keeps cutting tires, the repair addresses one tire and the cause will produce the next.
Ask what the assessment found
Whatever the outcome, ask for the reason. A tire judged not repairable for a stated reason is information about your site. A repair carried out comes with a record of what was done and where.
Where it fits
A site that wants this managed rather than handled one tire at a time is mining fleet services, and damaged or corroded rims are wheel refurbishing, both here. The national OTR services page covers fitting, repair and supply.
Other stores nearby
In Salt Lake City, the Commercial & Consumer store offers OTR services, and so does Tremonton to the north.
About this store
The Orem store carries all nine Purcell tire categories and is managed by Travis Olsen.
