The tire change is the moment to look

A wheel is only fully visible when the tire is off it. With the tire mounted, the bead seat, the flange and most of the rim surface are hidden, and a wheel can look perfectly serviceable while the part that matters is not.

That makes every tire change a free inspection, and the fleets that get good life from their wheels treat it that way.

Look at the bare wheel. The bead seat, where the tire seals, should be smooth. Pitting, scale or rough patches there cause slow leaks that get blamed on the tire.

Check the flange and the stud holes. Bends, nicks and cracks in the flange, and wear or elongation around the stud holes, are signs the wheel needs attention or is finished.

Decide while it is off. A wheel that needs refurbishing is easiest to deal with now, before a new tire is fitted to it. Mounting a new tire on a wheel that needs work means taking it off again later.

Batch the work. When several wheels across a fleet need refurbishing, sending them together is simpler to plan than one at a time, and a set of spares lets units keep running while their own wheels are away.

What refurbishing restores

Cleaning back to sound metal, restoring the bead seat and the surfaces that matter, and refinishing so the wheel is protected again. The inspection comes first and decides whether a wheel can be refurbished at all.

A crack ends the wheel and it is replaced.

Equipment rims come under the same work, and sites can coordinate them through OTR services. A vibration that comes back after a balance is also a reason to look at the wheel. The national wheel refurbishing page covers the process.
