Retreading in Idaho Falls, ID

Purcell Tire & Service collects casings for retreading at the commercial store, 4490 Andco Dr in Idaho Falls. The work is done at the Purcell plant in Boise. Call (208) 552-7888.

Hours, not miles

Most explanations of retreading are written for trucks, which measure everything in miles. A good share of the casings collected here come off machines that have never measured anything in miles at all.

A large agricultural tire accumulates hours. It spends its life at low speed under heavy load, often on soft ground, which wears tread slowly and works the casing differently from highway running. The outcome is that the casing on a farm tire is frequently sound long after the tread is finished, which is exactly the situation retreading exists for.

The saving on a large agricultural or OTR tire is therefore considerably larger than the saving on a truck tire, because the casing is a greater share of a much bigger number.

Where the work happens

Purcell runs seven retread plants. The one serving Idaho is the Boise plant at 8670 S. Eisenman Rd, and this store collects casings for it and handles transport in both directions.

Nothing is retreaded at Idaho Falls. You deal with this store rather than with the plant.

What the plant will take

Eight categories: commercial truck, agricultural, OTR, industrial, light truck, passenger, trailer, and UTV and ATV casings. Tracks are not retreaded at any Purcell plant.

This store carries all nine Purcell tire categories, so the casings going out and the tires coming in are handled in the same conversation.

Have it inspected before scrapping it

The common loss here is not a casing that failed inspection. It is a casing that was never presented for one.

A farm tire that looks finished, sitting against a shed wall, may be a sound casing. It takes somebody who knows what they are looking at to say, and the only cost of asking is the asking. Have marginal tires looked at while machines are idle rather than deciding in the yard.

Questions

Retreading questions, Idaho Falls

Can farm tires be retreaded?

Sound agricultural casings can be, and that is where the saving is largest. The casing often outlives several treads because the tire wears by hours rather than by miles.

Where does the work happen?

At the Purcell plant in Boise. This store collects casings and handles transport both ways.

How do I know whether a casing is worth sending?

Have it inspected. A tire that looks finished is not necessarily a casing that is finished, and asking costs nothing.

When should casings go in?

Between seasons, when the machine can spare the tire. Planned work is easier to place than work that arrives in a hurry.
