Between seasons is the whole opportunity
Retreading asks for one thing that farming operations usually have and trucking operations usually do not: a period when the machine can spare its tires.
A combine or a tractor standing through the off months is the ideal candidate. The tire comes off at a moment that costs nothing, goes to the plant, and comes back before the machine is needed. There is no downtime to account for, because the downtime already existed.
Missing that window is the common mistake. A casing identified in August is a casing nobody can do anything about until the work is finished, by which point it has usually been run further than it should have been.
Walk the machines while they are idle and decide then.
Where the work happens
No retreading is done in Twin Falls. Casings taken in here go to the Purcell plant in Boise, one of the company's seven, and come back ready to run.
Collection and return are arranged by the store, so there is nothing for you to organize and nobody for you to deal with beyond Stefanie Bluemel's team.
Why farm casings are worth the most
A large agricultural tire wears by hours under heavy load at low speed, which takes tread off slowly and leaves the casing sound long after the tread is finished.
The casing is also the expensive part by a wide margin on a tire that size. Retreading one is a materially different proposition from retreading a truck tire, and the operations that benefit most are frequently the ones never offered it, because nobody thinks of farm tires as retread candidates.
They are. The plant handles agricultural casings alongside commercial, OTR, industrial, light truck, passenger, trailer, and UTV and ATV. Tracks are not retreaded at any Purcell plant.
Have it inspected rather than deciding
A tire that looks finished is not necessarily a casing that is finished. What ends one is a tire run flat, under-inflation building heat where nothing visible reports it, and damage left unrepaired.
Asking costs nothing, and the store carries all nine Purcell tire categories, so the question and the replacement happen in the same conversation.
About this store
The Twin Falls store is the only Purcell location in south central Idaho, open Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, managed by Stefanie Bluemel. Boise and Idaho Falls Commercial collect for the same plant.
See the national retreading page for how the program works and for all 54 collecting locations.
