Wheel Refurbishing in Idaho Falls, ID

Purcell Tire & Service refurbishes wheels at the commercial store, 4490 Andco Dr in Idaho Falls, for trucks, trailers and equipment. Call (208) 552-7888.

One of two in the state

Two Purcell locations in Idaho offer wheel refurbishing: this one and Boise. Twin Falls does not.

For eastern Idaho that makes this the store for the work, and it is worth knowing before somebody orders replacement wheels on the assumption that replacement is the only route.

Know when to stop refurbishing a wheel

The question that rarely gets asked is when a wheel should be retired rather than repaired again.

A wheel that has been through the process before, has been running in corrosive conditions, and is back with the same symptom is telling you something. Refurbishing restores a surface; it does not add metal that has corroded away or undo fatigue. There is a point at which the sensible answer is a new wheel, and a shop willing to say so is worth more than one that refinishes anything presented to it.

A crack ends a wheel outright, as does damage affecting the structure. The inspection establishes which case you have before work starts.

What the service covers

The national wheel refurbishing page covers the process. The judgment described above happens during the inspection, which is why a wheel's history is worth having to hand when it goes in.

The surface that matters most is the bead seat. A tubeless tire holds its air between the bead and that narrow band of metal, so corrosion there leaks regardless of which tire is fitted. That is the explanation behind a position that always needs air and a new tire that changed nothing.

Keep a note of which wheels

For a fleet, wheels are the asset with no record attached. Nobody knows which have been done, when, or how many times.

Writing it down is the whole system. It turns the retirement decision above into something based on history rather than on whoever happens to be looking. Put it on your fleet account and it is kept for you.

Do it while the tire is off

A casing going to the Boise plant for retreading leaves a wheel standing free. That is the moment this work costs no extra downtime.

Questions

Wheel refurbishing questions, Idaho Falls

Where else in Idaho is this offered?

At Boise. Those are the two Purcell locations in the state offering wheel refurbishing.

Can a wheel be refurbished more than once?

Sometimes, and there is a point where it should not be. A wheel back with the same symptom after previous work is usually one to retire rather than repair again.

A new tire still leaks. Why?

Because the wheel is the sealing surface rather than the tire. The national wheel refurbishing page sets out why, and a wheel that has leaked before is one to check the history on.

When should we send them in?

While the tires are off for a retread. The casing goes to Boise and the wheel is free at the same moment.
