Trailers are the ones nobody balances
Ask most people whether their trailer tires are balanced and the honest answer is that they have never thought about it.
A trailer that shimmies, bounces or wanders at highway speed is a common complaint and it gets put down to the trailer being a trailer. Sometimes that is right. Sometimes it is balance, sometimes it is tire condition, and sometimes it is the trailer's own geometry, which is a different service. See trailer alignment.
What matters practically is that an unbalanced trailer wheel does the same thing an unbalanced vehicle wheel does. It wears the tread in patches and feeds vibration into the structure, with the difference that nobody is sitting on it to notice.
Call with the trailer and the tire size and the store will tell you what applies.
Material on a wheel is not a balance fault
On vehicles working around fields and unpaved roads, a wheel packed with dried mud or material is carrying weight that was never in the calculation.
The vibration appears, the driver assumes the balance has gone, and by the time the vehicle reaches a shop the material has fallen off and nothing is found. Clean the wheels, inner faces included, before judging a vibration. One that persists on a clean wheel is a real finding.
What balancing protects
Tread, which otherwise wears in patches and takes a set off early. On a commercial tire, the casing as well, since patchy wear can cost it its retread life, and this store collects for the plant in Boise.
When to ask for it
The national tire and wheel balancing page lists the occasions. The addition for an operation here is the trailer: it gets asked about last, if at all, and it is the thing covering highway miles with nobody sitting on it to notice.
A vibration at every speed, or a steering pull, points at alignment or at something worn. Both are handled here.
About this store
